Private companies make up 15% of the average family office portfolio. That makes them the second-largest investment category, behind only public equities.
The figure comes from the Q2 2026 CNBC Family Office Portfolio Tracker, which reads the portfolios of hundreds of family offices holding more than $1.4 trillion in assets. Public equities rose to 37% in the quarter. Private companies held at 15%, ahead of cash (9.2%), real estate (7.5%) and hedge funds (7%).
For many families, this isn't a passive stake. It's the business that created the wealth in the first place, or one the family still runs.
Yet, in most reporting systems, that 15% shows up as a single number that someone typed in once a year. There's no consistent data behind it.
Why private companies fall through the cracks
Most wealth reporting tools were built for public markets. They cover stocks, bonds, cash and maybe one or two alternative investments. A family office is more complex than that, and every family is different.
Private companies are the hardest piece to get right:
- No custodian feed. Nobody sends a daily statement for a family business. The data lives in the company's own accounting system.
- Values go stale. A valuation is often updated once a year, so the balance sheet is wrong for the other eleven months.
- Ownership is layered. Shares are usually held through holding companies, trusts and partnerships, not in the family's name.
- Financials live somewhere else. The P&L and balance sheet sit in QuickBooks or Sage, disconnected from the rest of the family's wealth.
The result is a blind spot in the second-largest part of the portfolio. Families can see how their stocks did yesterday, but not how their biggest asset is performing.
Connect the general ledger once, and the financials follow
MYFO connects directly to the company's accounting software, including QuickBooks, Sage and other general ledger platforms.
Once connected, the company's balance sheet and income statement flow into MYFO automatically. Families and advisors can review them over any date range, next to the rest of the portfolio. No more waiting for a PDF from the accountant.
MYFO doesn't replace your GL. The accounting stays with your bookkeeper. MYFO pulls the results into one view so the family can see what the business is doing.
How a private company appears in MYFO
In MYFO, a private company is a full asset on the family's balance sheet, not a single line in a spreadsheet.
- Placed in the ownership structure. The company sits under the holding company, trust or partnership that owns it, so the entity map shows who owns what and in what share.
- Built-in valuation tool. MYFO's private company valuation tool estimates what the business is worth by applying an industry multiple to its EBITDA. No waiting on a year-end appraisal. The family's share of that value, based on shares held, flows up through every entity to their net worth.
- Financial statements built in. A dedicated Financial Statements tab shows the connected balance sheet, income statement and cash flow statement.
- Linked to its debt. Loans and other liabilities can be tied to the company, so net worth reflects what the family actually owns.
- Tagged for reporting. Add sector, geography, benchmark and target return, then filter custom reports by entity, asset class or date.
The private company now sits next to the brokerage accounts, real estate, fund positions and cash, in one consolidated view.
What this means for families and their advisors
When 15% of a portfolio has no reliable data, every decision built on the full picture is off: net worth, liquidity, estate planning and allocation.
MYFO closes that gap. It's the operating system for family wealth, bringing together private companies, public portfolios, private equity and venture funds, real estate and liabilities in one place. Data comes in from account feeds, documents and accounting systems, then becomes consolidated reporting, dashboards and performance analysis.
Families see their whole balance sheet, including the business that built it. Advisors spend less time chasing statements and more time advising.
